As our mountain land becomes more fractionalized, the small land steward is in a precarious tottering position, with little support and few resources. There are supposed protections for this watershed, within the realms and laws of Buncombe County, but a lack of local code enforcement and follow through, to help mitigate some of the multiple issues of: illegal development, land grading, the storage of vehicles and construction waste and unsafe and poor sewage disposal. After removing two to three thousand of pounds of trash from a very small section of the Big Ivy over six years, (thank you to my wife Graciella in this! It's been an ongoing massive joint undertaking.), I look at the flood plain in a totally different light. The difficulties involved in removing: matresses, tires, fast food waste containers, construction debris, silt fencing, appliances, and engine blocks, gets more dificult with time. It's a dirty, smelly, and sometimes disgusting work.
